facebook + email = facebook messages

November 16, 2010

Facebook announced that they have created a new email service. With this announcement came a lot of confusion and with confusion comes questions – so the company decided to create a video about this new service and how it will operate.

Besides the fact that the company said this was the biggest engineering team — 15 engineers — it had ever put together for a new product, this video is another indication of just how important Messages is to Facebook. Not every new feature or service Facebook makes gets a video. The company is trying to both educate users on the new service and promote it.

If Messages takes off, Facebook gets users spending even more time on the network — not to mention more valuable user data like the email/SMS/chat patterns and contacts outside of the Facebook network. But don’t call  Facebook Messages email, says chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, and don’t call it a Gmail-killer either.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
